Investors vs. Speculators: Investing and Speculating Defined, Explained & Compared in One Minute
Are "investing" and "speculating" two terms that can be used interchangeably?
Like most things that pertain to economics, it's debatable and some thinkers do indeed claim that investing and speculating are pretty much the same thing.
More folks, however, are of the opposite opinion. They define and explain investing and speculating by taking into account factors such as risk tolerance and compare the two from this perspective.
As such, an investor tends to be considered more risk-averse than a speculator. Compared to investors, speculators are definitely more risk-tolerant and in many cases even risk seekers.
Is it a mistake to be a speculator, should all of us strive to be investors?

#9 Victor Niederhoffer – The Market Speculator
Victor Niederhoffer is one of the most famous investors and a true pioneer. After rubbing shoulders with a few of the future Nobel Laureates at the University of Chicago, he started a trading firm and made $20 million from the starting capital of $50k within 6 months. In the 90s, he was the right hand man of George Soros and with a 34% rate of return over 20 years, in 1996, he was recognised as the world’s best trader. However, next year he was on the wrong side of the trade and lost all of the capital. In this episode, we discuss the emergence of quant investing, how he started trading for Soros, what are some of the lessons he learnt while being an active market participant for 60 years straight and why he think that Jesse Livermore was a horrible trader.

Thank You From a Land Speculator
Land is the most important resource a community has. But the property tax system in most U.S. cities encourages the wasteful and unproductive use of land. By taxing building improvements, we punish people who improve their property with higher taxes—and we reward speculators, who can afford to sit on a vacant or underutilized lot in a prime location, do nothing with it, and watch their property value go up... and up... and up.
And for that, in this video, your buddy the real-estate speculator just wants to say, "Thanks, neighbor."
There's a better alternative: a tax on the value of the land itself, rather than the buildings on it. To learn more, visit www.strongtowns.org/landtax

Is it a mistake to be a speculator, should all of us strive to be investors?
Difficult to say, as there's more than one way to do well when it comes to matters of (personal) finance. At the end of the day, it all boils down to understanding the differences between the two and choosing whichever option works best for you.
Want to sleep better at night, even if the return potential is lower? Investing is the way to go, in that case.
Want your returns to be on the high side, even if it means taking on more risk? Welcome to the "wonderful" world of speculation :)

Deserts are a fascinating land subtype in Magic the Gathering, offering a unique blend of gameplay potential and thematic connection. Here's a breakdown of their key aspects:
Basics:
Mana: Most Deserts tap for colorless mana, reflecting their barren nature. Some have drawbacks like entering tapped or requiring additional resources to tap.
Rarity: Deserts appear across various rarities, with some serving as basic lands and others offering specific abilities.
Flavor: Themed around arid landscapes, Deserts often hold secrets, dangers, and hidden resources.
Gameplay:
Synergy: Several cards and mechanics directly interact with Deserts, offering mana fixing, creature buffs, and other benefits. Examples include the "Landfall" mechanic and commanders like Hazezon, Shaper of Sand.
Drawbacks: Many Deserts have limitations to balance their potential. Entering tapped, requiring additional resources to tap, or harming your creatures are common drawbacks.
Deckbuilding: Deciding whether to include Deserts depends on your deck's strategy. Aggro decks might prefer faster lands, while landfall-focused decks thrive with Deserts.
Subtypes and Themes:
Wastelands: Desolate and harsh, representing the core Desert experience.
Oases: Life-giving havens within the desert, often offering mana fixing or card draw.
Ruins: Remnants of ancient civilizations, sometimes granting powerful effects or hiding dangers.
Sand-themed creatures: Creatures like Sandwurms and Nomads often have abilities related to Deserts.
Popularity and Impact:
Deserts haven't always been a top tier land type, but sets like "Hour of Devastation" revitalized them with powerful synergies.
While not as ubiquitous as Forests or Plains, Deserts offer unique strategic options and flavorful deckbuilding experiences.
